La Crosse social justice leader to give TED Talk on discrimination

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Wale Elegbede, a founding member of the La Crosse Interfaith Shoulder to Shoulder Network, will provide a TED Talk Friday, sharing his perspective on ways to stop discrimination, racism and Islamophobia in the U.S.
Elegbede’s talk, “Stop Seeing Discrimination as ‘Their’ Problem and See it as ‘Our Problem,'” airs 10 a.m. Friday and highlights ideas that were sparked in the La Crosse community.
“I believe discrimination plagues us because we have not made it our collective business,” said Elegbede in a press release. “I believe that in order to get rid of discrimination which includes racism, Islamophobia, and hate crimes, we need to go from a state of ‘not my business’ to ‘everyone’s business.’ My belief is that this will help cultivate a shift in perspective, and result in a changed mindset that will build and sustain connection, empathy and elevate opportunities for everyone.”
Elegbede, who lives in Rochester, is a graduate of University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and Viterbo University.
“I imagine a world where there is no racism, hate crimes, Islamophobia, or Antisemitism. Imagine the endless possibilities and opportunities that kind of world would offer to all of our children,” Elegbede said. “When my TED Talk debuts, the key message that I really hope resonates is that discrimination is our collective problem and that our generation can solve it if we have the desire. I’m hoping my talk will inspire us to take action and make the changes needed to make that vision become a reality.”
Every year, TED works with a group of carefully selected organizations like the Project Management Institute to identify their best inventors, connectors, and creators. TED@PMI is a celebration of that need to re-imagine those moments of inspiration and the mesmerizing experience of turning ideas into action.
The TED@PMI Talks were sourced directly from the PMI community. More than 600,000 members and 500 employees, as well as more than 330,000 certification holders in China had the chance to submit their ideas.
Through a multi-round process, a team of TED coaches, including TED@PMI Curator Sally Kohn, vetted the entries to find the most compelling stories. From the applicant pool, 12 individuals were selected to go through the TED Talk speaker process, where coaches provide one-on-one storytelling guidance, talk development and public speaking training to sharpen and hone ideas and talks.
